What is Vegan Leather or PU leather?

Our Material is PU leather it is also known as polyurethane leather that is artificial. If you are someone looking for a cheaper option, something vegan, or comes in a variety of colors, PU leather will be a great option for you.


Stella & Tuffy material is 100% PU leather which is completely artificial and is considered vegan. There are some types of PU leather called bicast leather that have actual leather but has a polyurethane coating on top.


IS VEGAN LEATHER BETTER THAN REAL LEATHER?


Quality and durability are also important things to consider when comparing vegan and real leather. Vegan leather is often a lot thinner than real leather and much more light weight which is great for fashion and Dog collar. We have added extra layer inside for more strength in collar and leash.


A real, good quality leather can last decades when cared for. But fashion trends changes so quickly so there is no reason for spending lots of money on it. On the other hand, PU leather (vegan Leather) is cheaper and can be made into a variety of colors and styles.

PU Leather Pros:

 

  • PU Leather costs less than genuine leather because it is easier to manufacture.
  • PU doesn’t absorb water which makes it easy to clean.

Quality & Durability


Since polyurethane has been used as a special coating for heavy duty and industrial purposes it is very durable. It lasts a very long time and usually does not crack or wear down easily. The overall durability and quality is quite good and actually way better compared to most faux leather alternatives. But that is what it is originally made for – being very tough and long lasting.

Sustainability & Ethics


Sustainability wise PU leather is actually way better than animal leather. The production takes up way less resources and therefore more eco-friendly. Although it is not as sustainable as plant-based leather alternatives it is still more sustainable than conventional leather. Especially when it comes to 100% true PU leather. There are still a lot of chemicals and petroleum involved in the making it not the most eco-friendly solution. It also does not decompose when thrown away in nature.


When it comes ethics, it is obviously way better than animal leather. No animals are harmed during the manufacturing process since it is 100% man made and requires no animals at all for the making. It is therefore also completely vegan.

Water Test


Animal leather is not water resistant. It absorbs it and gets quite wet. Pu leather on the other hand is very water resistant and does not absorb it at all. This adds to the durability of it.

PU vs PVC

 

  • PU is more complicated than PVC in production process. As PU base fabric is high tensile strength canvas, except coated on top of the fabric base, but also able to cover the fabric base in the middle, then you can't see its fabric base.
  • PU has better physical properties than PVC, with good torsion resistance, softness, tensile strength and air permeability.
  • There is no smell of plastic in PU Leather

    Check if someone else at home or work accepted or signed for the item on your behalf. If you live or work in a large building, check with building management or the mailroom to see if they have it.
